Counting IVF drops for a full minute is stupid..
I remember counting IVF drops for a full minute for fear of doing it wrong (and killing the patient). I was braing storming one duty day and I came to a realization. Drops don’t need to be counted for a full minute. Bullshit! Those Clinical Instructors are full of bull! I’m getting revenge someday. Remember kids counting for a full minute is fail! Ultimate fail!

Given a 30 gtts IVF. Instead of counting it for a full minute.. (more after the jump)
you can count it like this. 1, drop, 2, drop, 3, drop.. Count like that for a full minute and you get 30 drops. Remember to compare your counting with your wrist watch ofcourse to make the counting more accurate or when counting say/think “one thousand one”, drop, “one thousand two”, drop etc2x..
Here’s a lsit
one, drop, two, drop, three, drop = 30 gtts/min
one, two, three, drop, one, two, three, drop = 15 gtts/min
one, two, three, four, five, drop, one, two, three, four, five, drop = 10 gtts/min
the math is like this
60/ (number of drops) = counting
example
so lets say gtts/min ordered is 30. So.. 60/30=2 thus the one, drop, two, drop counting..
another example
gtts/min ordered is 15. 60/15= 4. thus the one,two,three,drop,one,two,three, drop counting..

did the math myself.. I’m pretty sure most staff nurses know about this. But no one ever told me ![]()
